Acne is a skin condition that affects nearly everyone at some point in their life.6 Acne often occurs in teenagers or young adults, but it can appear at any age.7 Depending on how severe the acne is, it may cause emotional harm and physical scarring. If you have acne, effective treatments are available and should be started early to lower your risk of lasting physical and emotional damage.

Understanding how acne forms

Skin contains pores. Your pores connect to sebum-producing oil glands through a canal called a follicle. Within the follicle is a hair, and oil (or sebum) carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin to be shed. Sometimes the hair, sebum and skin cells clump together, forming a plug. If bacteria that live on our skin (p. acnes) enter the clogged pore, it can cause redness and swelling. Inflammation that goes deep into the skin can result in the formation of an acne cyst or nodule.8

Why does acne usually appear on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders? These areas have the most oil glands of your body.

Acne signs and symptoms

Acne signs and symptoms are different for everyone and will depend on the severity of your acne. They may include:7

  • Blackheads (open plugged pores)
  • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
  • Papules (small red bumps)
  • Pustules (pimples)
  • Cysts (painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin)
  • Nodules (large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin)

Tips for managing acne:8

  1. Wash your face twice a day and shower or bathe after sweating. Sweat can make acne worse, especially if you wear a hat or helmet. It’s important to wash your skin soon after you have been sweating.
  2. Use your fingertips to apply a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. A washcloth or mesh sponge can irritate your skin.
  3. Be gentle on your skin. Use products that don’t contain alcohol or irritants. Avoid astringents, toners and exfoliants. These products may give you dry, red skin which makes acne appear worse.
  4. Don’t scrub your skin! Avoid the temptation to scrub or exfoliate your skin. It could make your acne worse.
  5. Rinse with lukewarm water.
  6. Wash your hair regularly. If you have oily hair, shampoo daily.
  7. Let your skin heal naturally. Picking, popping and squeezing your acne can make it last longer and increases the risk of scarring.
  8. Don’t touch your face. Touching your skin can trigger flare-ups.
  9. Stay out of the sun and tanning beds. We know that tanning damages our skin. Some acne products can also make the skin very sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, which you can’t avoid if you’re in the sun or an indoor tanning device.
  10. Talk to a dermatologist if:
    • You feel shy or embarrassed by your acne
    • The acne products you've tried have not worked
    • Your acne is scarring or darkening your skin.

Acne treatment and prevention

The good news is acne can be treated. Consult your dermatologist if you aren’t getting the results you want from products you have tried on your own. Not every acne treatment works the same. Some help kill the bacteria. Others reduce the oil that your skin produces.

Be patient. It could take 4-8 weeks to see an improvement. Remember, once the acne clears, don’t stop your treatment. It’s important to continue to treat the skin to prevent future breakouts.9 Ask a dermatologist how long you need to use your acne product.
